About the Event

The Shaw D. Kinsley Lecture Series Presents:  Dr. Joe Cicero's "Fireflies and Glowworms of  Arizona."

Dr. Joe Cicero was a graduate from the University of Arizona, where he did his Masters on a genus of Arizona fireflies. He moved to Florida where he earned his PhD with his dissertation on firefly evolution, took several post-docs, then came back to Tucson recently, and is currently revisiting localities where fireflies were known or discovered by him to occur.

Joe will present a slide and video show summarizing the 15 fireflies and 5 glowworms known to occur in Arizona. Two of them fly and flash at night, 5 of them fly during the day and have no, or faint lights. The remaining 8 firefly species and all glowworms have flightless females. The adult fireflies do not feed, but their larvae are known to feed on snails. The known female and larval glowworms feed on millipedes.

Tropical fireflies will also be showcased, including the monolithic, synchronously flashing firefly trees in SE Asia, and compared to our own local firefly that synchronizes also.
