About the Event

The Shaw D. Kinsley Lecture Series Presents:  "The First Filibusters: French & American Incursions into Sonora"

Filibuster is a term that evokes political theatrics in the halls of Congress in Washington, D.C. However, this presentation seeks to change that perception behind the meaning of the word by illuminating a little-known time period during the mid-nineteenth century when Sonora was the target for incursions by foreign and often stateless mercenaries. These historical happenstances were due to the northwestern Mexican state's mineral rich reputation and precarious frontier situation. These incursions made by individuals of French and American extraction who were known to Mexico as the filibusteros and left lasting impacts on the heritage of the state of Sonora.

Snacks will be served.  $15 per lecture.  A portion of the proceeds supports our education and preservation programs.  This lecture takes place inside the 1885 Old Schoolhouse.
